My buddy and I have been rebuilding the carbs for the 82 xj650 I just purchased. I was wondering if there is anyone in the Oshkosh area of Wisconsin who likes to help out. We are almost done rebuilding it, but aren't too experienced with syncing them afterwards. We can pay in beer or cash or both if there is anyone able and willing!
Thanks much. General advice is also appreciated :)

With the carbs still off the bike you want to start with a "bench-synch". It may sound intimidating but is really very simple if you follow the directions found here:

    http://xjbikes.com/Forums/viewtopic/t=6 ... synch.html

I used the "thin strip of business card" instead of a paper clip method & really liked the results.

That should get you a very good base point to get the bike running if your carbs are "zestfully clean". Then you're on to the running vacuum synch. I don't think there is a detailed write-up as clear and graceful as the link above for bench-synching but this thread should get you there:

    http://xjbikes.com/Forums/viewtopic/t=3 ... synch.html

There's been a lot of discussion as to whether it's necessary to block the YICS port to get a proper synch. I think the bench-synch might get you 80% there, a synch without the YICS port blocked will get you 25-29% and blocking the YICS port will get you that last little 1-5% so it definitely pays to do it if you can but it's not absolutely necessary or vital to the process. Keep in mind though - I'm no wizard & I just pulled those numbers straight outta' my arse!

I'm in Neenah and have a YICS tool and vacuum sync gauge. If you get it drivable and want to stop by sometime I can help you out.

Awesome! That would be wonderful. Hopefully we will have her going again within the next week or two. I'll shoot you a PM when we do. :)
