looking at a new battery since i cant stand flooded batteries -- theyre messy and high maintenance..

for general 12v power storage i have a bunch of AGM batteries which work great for general use around the house (UPS, telescope, breadboard)

What is the word on AGM (sealed) batteries for motor bikes? do they have the cranking amps necessary for an XJ? anyone suggest a particular brand or supplier?

Does most everyone just stick to flooded batteries and their annoying maintenance requirements?

I've got AGM batteries on my 2 XS1100's and my XJR1200. Best batteries ever.
    I use these http://motobatt.com/

You could also try a Shorai LFX Lithium battery. Weight savings, minimal discharging, etc. Haven't tried it, but people seem to like them.

I'm a fan of AGM, being up north I like the strong cold cranking.

I bought an AGM at least 5 years ago for my XS650 and I've also used it to crank my lawn tractor. It has never let me down once.

AGM batteries are definitely the way to go.

    so, AGM then :)

I like the Lithium idea.. didnt know there was a ready made product... I expected i would have to use LiFePo (lithium iron phosphate)cells.. ive seen people build car batteries using cells scavanged from dewalt tool batteries .. trouble isnt it getting a proper LiFePo 12v cell, its integrating a proper charging circuit so you dont cook the battery on the alternator.. could be a fun project for some of the more talented wire monkeys out there :)

lithium battery tangent .. Last year i built a 50+mph electric bicycle on a 72v 20Ah LiMn (lithium manganese-oxide) battery. Its a fun commuter totally free of license or insurance restrictions. truly a go anywhur motorbike.

I have an AGM in my Maxim. don't know if you can leave them in the cold or not so i pulled it last winter. Put it in the bike in that spring without even a trickle charge and it fired right up.

So I would say go with the AGM.

AGM all the way. They also have more amps per given size (cubic inches) so if you can't find one the same size you can ususlly get by with a smaller one and still have more amps than the flodded one. Just shim the box so it doesn'r bounce around.

Ok, this thread is old, but covering the bases for anyone searching for an AGM battery for their 82xj650

Ended up buying the AGM battery linked below, which is exactly the same size as the stock / flooded cell, and cheaper than any local/retail option:

    Scorpion YT12C, AGM 180CCA
