    Hi all,
I have an issue with my indicator (turning lights) on my '81 xj 650 in that they are not flashing. They are coming on ok. Is this because I have disconnected the back lights and the front don't have enough load. Also where exactly is the flasher unit. Is it part of the flasher relay or is it part of the flasher cancellation unit???
    Thanks
    Peter

Your symptom is indeed likely the result of disconnecting the rear signals.

The stock system requires TWO 27W bulbs (1156's) per side, to flash. It's not pulling enough current through the flasher.

The flasher is the flasher relay; the cancellation unit is just that.

Also keep in mind that the bike is running off the battery below 2500RPM or so, so if after you have enough load the signals still don't flash at idle or when the bike isn't running you could also have a weak battery.

Awesome that sounds like what is happening. Do you also (then) need to be careful when you use LED Indicator lights???

I'll chime in and say that without full draw, the blinkers won't blink. LED are going to be much less draw, so some adjustments will need to be made.

I've seen a few threads on LED signals, dummy loads, etc. Adding a load will bring up the current draw, so no saving of amperage in that solution. Low-wattage relays would seem like the ticket, but I know nothing about a solution.

Hopefully others will add in more useful information.

there is a thread on adding a relay to a low draw led flasher to keep the self cancel. might have to dig a bit to find it.
