RPM increase after warm up, and a couple of other problems

    My story goes like this:
I let the bike sit for a couple of years. I cleaned the carbs, changed the engine and final drive oils, changed the fuse block, cleaned the petcock, and changed the battery during the winter but couldn't get it to start.

I've come back to it this spring and have re-cleaned the carbs and did a better job but I still have to spray gas into the air intake to get it to start. (I need to do a better job on the starter fuel circuit, I can get carb cleaner to ooze out when sprayed into the starter circuit but it won't shoot out like in the video that somebody posted on here.)

Once it starts there is a knocking noise that increases in frequency with rpms.
Once it warms up and is in neutral the rpms run away to about 4000 until I shut it off. While I'm riding it the rpms will slowly but surely increase, resulting in an increase in speed.
After I shut it off, there is some smoke coming from the bottom of the engine, near the front.

After doing a little searching here a few minutes ago, I will try setting the idle screw on it to try to take care of the rpm problem.

Any other suggestions (rpm, knocking, smoke)?

I haven't had a chance to get to setting the idle speed. I'll post the results.

    Any other suggestions?

    And a little more searching...

I'm going to adjust the cam chain tension manually to see if that gets rid of the knocking.
I'm thinking I might have rotated it the wrong way when I first un-winterized it (sprayed some fogging oil in the spark plug holes and then rotated the square "nut" counter-clockwise).

    I'll post the results.

Umm, Maximphilly2texas, was there a reason you dragged up and quoted this over-five year old thread with no additional comments?

Are you experiencing the same issues?

If you're having problems with the bike you just bought, then start your own thread please. We're here to help if you're willing to listen and learn.

Sorry. I'm a new member and honestly have never messed with forums or threads so I wasn't really sure how to go about it. I found a problem that related and commented.

No worries. Your new thread is already generating much more applicable responses.
