I was just talking with a local Yamaha parts store and he suggested getting OEM intake boots. The issue he pointed out what that the carb slips out of the aftermarket option and its not a perfect fit.

    Thoughts?

Contact Chacal at XJ4ever. He is the best authority on aftermarket vs oem.

Yup, already got a quote from him for these parts, these are his words...

NOTE: the reproduction manifolds are excellent quality, basically indistinguishable from the originals. However, the gaskets that come with them are a very thin paper style, much less substantial than the originals, although they probably will work okay. You might want to consider buying some of the original manifold-to-head gaskets when ordering a reproduction kit.

I'm not worried about aftermarket boots, quality wise. For rubber pieces, in many ways I avoid the OEM ones because if they are truly original, they are old, and often the rubber has degraded substantially. I've made the mistake buying OEM muffler gaskets as well (the bigger ones between the mufflers and the collector), and those kinda crumbled when I squeezed the pieces together. Lesson learned.

Just buy the whole lot from Len. A few more dollars perhaps but you KNOW the parts will be correct and good quality. What's more you will be supporting a VITAL resource to this forum.

Agreed on all points, I've already ordered from Len and exchanged many email.... amazing resource and I'm glad he's here!

However, this shop is a 15min walk from my work and will be good in a pinch (emergency parts for example), also I cannot have certain items shipped across the border (Uni Filter Oil for example, this shop can get it for me) and shipping can get pricey.

Another red flag from this shop - when asked about steel brake lines he suggested that the one still on the bike (dated 1981) are probably still good!

The intake boot comments just confirmed my suspicion that they are full of.....

Thought of that! I remember the posting with the pics of crumbling rubber.

I didn't to get in to it with an older guy on the phone who came across as THE authority on these things.

I ended the conversation with "its my life thank you, brake lines are important!" and he pretty much let it go...

He doesn't get a commission if you buy elsewhere..

Did he mention how you will become irresistible to all American Foxes when you spend your money on their 35-Percent marked-up parts.

I went by today, the guy means well and has a pretty interesting old school shop (65yr old guy with tons of experience, set in his ways), lots of original parts, everything is on microfiche and had on hand a few things I needed to finish up a job.

Had a nice Kawasaki Z1 on a lift having its electrical being worked on, nice clean bike, Seca 650 out front...
