Why or how do float levels change?

Hi Guys,

I was just wondering how or why float levels change?

I presume they are set right at the factory, so unless somebody goes in there and changes them on purpose, I can't see what happens to them to put them off.

What am I missing?

 

DIRT! This is why I choose to use only premium gas that is non-ethanol. Ethanol fuel can varnish up your carbs real good over time. I also will pour 3 oz. of Sea Foam in the gas every few hundred miles to help clean things out. I use an inline fuel filter and change it out every year as well. Worn parts over time will also change things.

 

The Viton rubber tip either wears or "dries out" - changing the critical dimension. The seat could wear as well.

(the Irish don't waste Ethanol in their Petrol !!)

Timetoride, unfortunately we too have ethanol in our petrol, too much for my taste. I believe there is between 5% and 10%?

 

I would look for a station that sells non-ethanol. They are out there you just have to find them.
We actually have 2 stations in our small town that sell non-ethanol.
It is more expensive fuel but it is worth it to me because it is less burden in the long run.

Metal also fatigues over time, so 30+ years of riding can bend the tab slightly which would allow more gas into the bowls. Remember, we only have +/- 1mm to play with, so it won't take much.

Also, if you have to change your float needles, the new ones may be a slightly different length than the originals, which throws everything out of wack. That latter is why mine is currently in the garage with the carbs on the bench.

 

No kidding?? How do they justify it there -
In the USA it's roughly "Energy Neutral" meaning we use alot of Diesel to farm the corn, and Natural Gas to distill it, then lose again in reduced fuel economy.

Last year we lost 25% of the corn crop to drought - which is the amount that we turn into Ethanol. We're burning our food reserves at this point.

 

It's getting ridiculous, I can't find an ethanol-free station within 50 mile radius of my location at all... No other choice than to use the blended stuff.
