Must say thanks for letting me join this wonderful website. My name is andrew and I'm from Georgia and picked up an 83 xj750 maxim a few weeks ago for 800 bucks. It ram but needed to be gone through. Well I got the carbs church cleaned so far and now it acres like a banshee ;) still waiting for a few parts that I've ordered online. Previous owner cut off the exhaust and was running no airbox or filter at all.... what an idiot
.... anyway, so now as I've read on here I'll have to rejet the carbs I have done theath provided and have the correct jets on the way. :D after getting her running I ran her around the block and noticed when I get on it the clutch slips so I have the friction plates and springs on the way too. I saw someone on here that made a xj bobber I'll be doing the same since she's not in perfect shape and I don't have tons of money and its a first bike. Anyway it'll be nice to get some pointers and feedback. Once again its nice to be part of this group thanks a lot guys!

    Welcome to the site.

Here'a a fantastic write up on clutch replacement.

As noted in the write-up replace the flange bolts too, and not with one from the local hardware store. A torque wrench is critical for this also.

    How are the brakes?

Tires are new but I'm sure the brakes are due for an overhaul.

Welcome to XJBikes Saltys. I would suggest to try and change the oil and filter first before tearing into the clutch. Our XJ's use a wet clutch system which means that you can't use a lot of the new oils which contain friction modifiers which can cause a wet clutch to slip. So for kicks, you can try draining the current oil and install a new filter with new JASO type oil. A motorcycle oil for four strokes like Castrol 4T or Valvoline motorcycle oil works great. Could also use Shell Rotella as well. See if that fixes your problem before tearing into her. Would hate for you to do all the work replacing the clutch and find you still have the problem if you use the wrong oil.

2nd on Xjoe550. My clutch slipped a little when I 1st got her. It was only at 7k or above rpm, but it did slip a little. I put valvoline motorcyle oil in her and it cleaned that problem right up. I, too, got lucky and picked up an xj750 for a dime:) $600 ;) and she runs great!!

Don't try to talk the guy out of rebuilding his 30-year old clutch; it's an eventuality anyway. You'll be doing it too sooner or later.

Andrew, be sure you check your valve clearances ASAP. Even though the bike may seem to run better after carb service, the valve clearances were often ignored by POs and they cannot simply be ignored. The clearances tighten with wear and if ignored long enough it will damage the motor.

Plus it's a prerequisite for doing a carb sync.

Yesterday I swapped the clutch and springs and it was shot. Thanks forthe oil tip tthough I knew they were wet churches but didn't know u had to use certain oil for this bike. And fitz I'll be doing the valve job soon but for now I can't do anything I gashed my hand open at work last night and can't use my fingers on my right hand ATM. Maybe next weekend when I'm off work and have some scabs built up.

Castrol 4T 20w50 motorcycle oil is pretty common. Manual calls for 20w40, which is almost impossible to find, so this is a good alternative.

Salty, just make sure the oil is motorcycle specific.

Autozone, Advanced Auto and Walmart all carry the Castrol and Valvoline motorcycle oils. Give one of them a shot. I have picked the Castrol 4T for $2.99 on sale from Autozone in the past.

What jets did you get? Did you have any luck with them. I need to do the same but not sure where/what I'm buying.

Funny I've been to all of those stores ended up getting a 20w50 generic universal oil. No clutch slipping.. and TeX mymath calls for 126 mains and 41 pilots since 42s don't exist that's with pods and straight pipes

The problem with many Universal and Car oils is the additives. They aren't designed for a Wet Clutch, thus we always look for something that states it's specifically for Motorcycles.

Makes sense but for me I just want to get it running. Not all stores even with the same name carry the same products and every time I order online I end up waiting two weeks

All of the auto parts stores listed above carry motorcycle oil in most of their locations; however it's usually not in the same place within the store that the automotive oil is.

Not to mention I am going to have to do an oil change in 200 miles being it is a brand new clutch because of all the debre that comes off the new clutch. It shouldn't !matter what kind of oil I use this time. I also made sure not to use energy conserving oil which specifically makes abwet clutch slip.

Thanks fitz maybe that is my problem. However dumb it is that they don't have oil in the oil section is I should have thought of that! And fitz I heard we have a parts guru around here can he run debit/credit cards? And can I get a link to talk to him because before I tear the top end off I'd like to buy all the valve shims and push rods a new clutch gasket and possibly more parts from him when I get off work tomorrow morning. Or this weekend depending on what kind of bill we work up.

I wouldn't say it's super secure, but at least you only need to worry about paypal getting hacked/compromised (it happened a few times) instead of mirriad of online retailers having your CC number un-encrypted on their servers.

Don't add anything to the oil. Just run proper motorcycle oil.

OK this fitz. Dry for the lack of posts recently. I've encountered housing issues and the rebuild has been delayed that on top of working from 6pm to 6am makes things a little more difficult

. I'm having trouble finding these jets. Did you order them online? If so where did you get them?
