Sounds like your friend jumped the gun, was just excited to buy a bike, hard to know what to look out for when you're that green...

Hopefully he'll learn from it, definitely a few things there to keep him busy

You should have never taken him for a ride on your 650.....lol....

Don't be too hard on him. Haven't we all been there to some extent?

After many years I have managed to train myself with a bit of e-bay patience but boy it's still hard if you see that 'I wont get that chance again' bargain - which of course it likely isn't and yes you will !

On the plus side you get to know more about your bike, and after all isn't that half the fun ?

It appears to be essentially "all there" if the motor is sound (do a compression test) then it has potential.

The biggest issue is that he paid 3X what he should have.

Even though he overpaid fot the condition that it is in, when all the work is done he'll still be riding a fantastic bike, and won't be too far over what it would have cost to buy one that didnt' need any work.

if the last guy hadn't done anything at all you would basically be working on the same things. if your going to make it right, it doesn't really matter what you start with. it was a bit expensive though

Most of the things you listed were easy to fix with little money, just a bit of elbow grease. If the engine, clutch and drivetrain are sound, it shouldn't take a lot of money to get it ride worthy. If it has good tires, that's a $350 savings alone. I paid $600 for my xj750. To make it road worthy cost me less than $100 in parts but over $350 in tires.... Lots of elbow grease too!!

Personally, I don't think he did too bad. just needs some attention... like any other old bike.... The guy that bought a bike with a frame rusted through... now he did bad....

Definitely a MacGyvered bike, but looks complete enough. Help your buddy cover his ass tho, and safety check all the rubber, brakes, etc. Enthusiasm can get you through a lot of pain, but can cause even more.
