So I have an 85 xj700n, carbs, brakes, valve timing, tires, exhaust all been gone through.

The only thing I haven't done is rebuild the clutch (plates)?

    Now here is what's happening

When starting in first It pulls hard till about 8,000rpm then the tack just jumps up real fast but the bike doesn't go anywhere. It does the same in second and I think third. Then in Third or forth it does the same thing with the tack except it's only about 4-6thousand rpm's where the tack jumps up pretty quick but the bike isn't really accelerating.

I'm thinking the clutch just needs to be rebuilt but thought it might be the gearbox or something.

I really love riding this bike and I think I will only love it more If I can fix this problem.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated, thank you.

    Are you running motorcycle oil?
If not that COULD be the problem...either that or perhaps your clutch is giving up the ghost.

Yeah I Just replaced the oil in it last week, it is indeed motorcycle oil. What do you mean by giving up the ghost,? I've never herd that term before.

Giving up the ghost = passing into the great beyond = dying

You are describing classic clutch slippage symptoms. Confirm that the clutch is adjusted properly. If it is, then you do indeed need to rebuild the clutch.

lol I thought that's what you meant.

Well hopefully it's just the clutch then and rebuilding it should produce a brand new bike as far as I'm concerned. I'm actually excited now because I can't wait to find out how it rides once I rebuild it. I was pretty sure that's what it was I just wanted to get a second opinion. Thanks K-moe and Patman

First, make sure you're Clutch isn't tight.

Sounds like all the fun is used-up from the Clutch you got in there right now.

Tend to matters before ruining the Drivers.

    As already mentioned, ...
A whole new Clutch: Frictions, Drivers, Springs and Hardware makes the Bike really fun to ride.

I can only imagine what that's going to be like, it's pretty fun now so I'm about jumping out my seat at this point :)

I did notice a loud clicking that would go away if the clutch leaver was pulled in slightly so I adjusted the cable and it went away, is that normal and or related?

Quite possibly related and it may indicate impending failure of your wafer (throwout) bearing.

I would look into it sooner than later.
