:?: I want to thank the person that got me this link so I can get some help.
I need a manual .If someone has a spare or no longer need theirs.I downloaded a pdf but it is hard to read.(real small print) I own an 82 750 maxim. With many problems.I rebuilt the front calipers. It now has front brakes.I did the carbs and it runs super well. What kind of oil and the oil weight 10-40 ???? Where can I buy an oil filter. My rear break is not good.Where do I get good break shoes. My rear tire rubs very tiny bit against the shaft drive. Can the wheel center be adjusted. If I had a manual I could solve some of these myself.Have a great day

Hi dude, I can tell you the problem with the rear tire is it's most likely too wide, just change to a narrower one when that one wears out. There is no adjustment for the rear wheel, it goes all the way in or something is wrong. As far as oil, make sure it's for motorcycle engines, some auto oils have additives which can interfere with the starter clutch. You can find a shop manual on Ebay, it's from Haynes and has some errors and other inaccuracies but you can still get good info out of it.

Welcome :) Glad you managed to get into the forums OK. I'd agree the tyre is probably too wide but just to double check could you post the numbers from the sidewall please, and the model code of the bike too (find that on the right side of your frame's head tube, don't post the whole chassis number just the model code. '82 XJ750 J should be 15R).

the '82 750 max runs 130/90 16 according to my manual where other years should have 120/90 18

As for the oil, as stated you need a motorcycle specific oil. It also needs to be mineral NOT synthetic or semi, 10W40 "SE" grade.
Ebay can be a good resource for some manuals & generic/used parts, but to be guaranteed good quality/service & satisfaction I'd recommend you buy bike specific parts from XJ4Ever http://www.xjbikes.com/Forums/viewforum/f=23.html (he's username "chacal" on here & is supporting vendor to the forums as well as an authority on what's what with these bikes. I've never had occasion to buy from him as I'm in the UK sadly & shipping would kill me but everyone who has leaves glowing reviews & he's been a great help to me with advice & info even though I haven't spent any money with him yet! Thank You Len :) )

EDIT-: on the link I added to Len's area, below the part catalogues there's a lot of good reading material on ID'ing bikes/cleaning carbs/all about tuning with YICS and other interesting & useful stuff that's good to go through if you're new to XJ's ;)

Hey thank you so much .You are the only pereson to really reply 130 90 16 is the tirew number.I kinda tweaked and did a little push and shove on the axle and the tire barely clears.I got a haynes manual from Amazon .com .It should show up tomorrow I am having a terrible time with this website.I want to post bike pictures and an avatar picture. It always says my file is to large and I dont know how to decrease my picture format. My bike so far is excellent.I took my windshield off and polished out all of the scratches.Im not a fan of windshields .A friend was decapatated on his.Took the top of his head right off.I held him in my arms until the paramedics took him doa...I still have the BMW .Maybe one day I will fix it.Thank you again for your reply. Also your info XJFOREVER COOL

Yeah I don't know how your question got missed to be honest, only just realised you asked on the 15th! 8O normally one of the regulars will catch it but sometimes when a lot of stuff gets posted people's questions "drop off" the first page & don't get seen.

OK on the tire, 130/90 16 is correct for an '82 750 maxim so I don't think it should be that close, although some brands are wider than others for a given size (Avon are a prime example!) and I think radials are a bit wider too (would be 130/90 R16).

If the wheel bearings are smooth with no play I'd suspect it's the tire unless someone can suggest anything else that could be wrong? only other thing I can possibly think of is one of the left bearings was missing (there's 2 on the drive side) or someone didn't refit the bearing spacer, but I think it's be obvious if that was true as the wheel would probably be loose/moving side to side...

Just a point I should have mentioned earlier, new XJ owners are advised to check their rear brake shoes as they can delaminate & lock the wheel if they're getting old. There's a link to the thread showing what to look for in my signature below, as well as links to checking the age of your front brake hose & age of your tires. Just a few little safety checks to hopefully keep everyone rubber side down :)

EDIT-: oh by the way, best way to get photos to show up is to upload them on photobucket .com & then copy/paste the IMG code into your reply.

Any image editor will do. GIMP is available for the exorbitant cost of zero dollars.

On the plus side, they're great in the rain and on cold mornings.

    So are helmets.
