I have a little problem! Im building a bobber and had it on a board on a jack stand were it was supposed to be to weld the hardtail pieces on and cut everything up and before I could take measurements my lovely wife bumped into it and down goes the bike. Now I have know clue the ride height. If someone could give me a measurement of their bikes bottom of the swing arm closet to the front of the swing arm that would be awesome and give me a starting point.

the service manual lists the minimum ground clearance at 5.9 inches. I imagine that is under the exhaust collector, since that would be the lowest point on our xj's.

Just to let you know - a member lowered a hard-tail until the rear tire touched the rear frame "saddle" bracket, an estimated 5 1/2 inch drop, and the driveshaft "U" joint survived thousands of miles to the outrage of several members here.

I'm not saying it's a smart thing to do, but it happened. Chop away !!
(and the kickstand is like 4 inches !!)

Time, was that the guy who took a grinder to the U/J "ears" to get clearance too? 8) fair play!

So one of you guys with a reasonably stock 750 go measure from the swingarm pivot tube to the ground and post the result for the OP, please?

I forgot that detail - was it Kevin11 or Crath ??

Seca 750 on centerstand, horizontal frame tube by peg-to-floor is 9 1/2 inches. This would settle down to 8 inches or so when it's on the wheels.

JBA-78, why can't you install 1 rear shock and get your "baseline" that way?? You could easily take off an inch from that, or get a 1X2 board and drill 2 holes. I did that after stealing the shocks from my turbo bike.

Time, this is what rules out putting a shock back on! :( Might have been wiser to measure before cutting... Hindsight & all that...

Yes I think it was crath now you mention it.

I think what would help this guy is with the bike on centrestand, measurement between rear axle centre and ground... or how far the tyre is off ground but that's less accurate as tyres vary.

Ahhh - hard to visualize "frame all chopped-up"
so, by line-of-sight, the right swingarm and swingarm pivot points to a spot on the front down-tubes that is one inch above the front engine mount bolt hole. And by my ESTIMATES, you would point the swingarm directly AT the top bolt hole, or go lower as you desire.
My factory shocks are fully extended.

Maybe somebody can give a look with the bike on the ground and a rider's weight on it, to give the "correct" angle. And tire choice wouldn't change this angle, but "preload" would.

Thank you all for your input. I got it all figured out. This is what she looks like. I'm getting her all welded up this coming weekend.
