Kind of a cute little bike, if you ask me...

Cute it is, rare too I'd bet. Think they sold them over here as the FS1-C (or something very similar). Never seen one in the flesh though. Loving the optimistic speedo only going up to 5mph less than US XJ's

Yep. Yamaha brought those out kind of as a "promo" for the bigger Midnight Specials of the era. Rare little birds actually (in that trim anyway.)

Cheap too if you compare it to what FS1-E's go for over here...

So *that's* what Yamaha does with their lawn mower engines. ^_^

There was one of those for sale here a few months ago. I considered buying it but I didn't have the extra cash. It stated out at $1200 and after three months it was down to $500. I don't know if it ever sold.

two of those suckers popped up this summer in portland. each seller wanted a grand. one was really beat up, and the other was in pretty good condition.

i was reading that most of the bikes were giving to dealer ships as a promotional tool (like fitz was saying.) and later were given away as time went on and new bikes came through.

Now that is cheap, I'd snap at it for that price. You'd be lucky to find one in the UK with the "FS1" nametag for anything less than £1500 for a basket case, for some reason grown men are paying daft money for the old "sixteener specials" now. Something to do with mid-life crises I believe lol.

I wouldn't mind having it as part of a collection, but Duluth is all hills and I'd worry the 50CC wouldn't be able to take it as a daily. I'm sure it would pull better than a 49cc scooter (which barely make it up hillside), but it's got to pull a lot more weight with that frame. Still, I've kept my eyes out for an XS400 as a short range commuter. Moving out of town at the end of the year means I'll stick with the XJ for that now...gonna be more fun commuting 20 miles rather than 2!

They are fun little bikes. I have one in storage. They actually pull pretty good for a 50cc bike. They are easy to do a wheelie on. Yamaha used the same motor in the YSR50. They only difference was a change to the transmission got the shift lever direction.

    I saw that one too.

There was another quite similar but a single seater with a factory trunk blended into the bike.

It's the same bike; the trunk is just hard to see in the pic of the Midnite Special version.

They came to the States for only 2 years, '83~'84. Here's a pic I lifted off the 'net:
