81 Max frt brk m/cyl

    rode that scooter all summer and had a great time! I went to move it the other day and the front brake lever touched the grip. uh-oh.
    does not seem to pump up. pads very nearly new. I'm gonna bleed it when I feel better [heart surgery last week] and if that doesn't work then I hope someone has a good master cylinder lying around... single front disc.
    Any other ideas? I'm always up for advice and suggestions....

    Sounds like the M/C, but before doing a rebuild, make sure it's not something else (lines, bleeder valve loose, etc). I've made that mistake before!

    How old are the brake lines? Those puppies only are good for about 4 years. They don't have be leaking for you to lose brake power because they overflex. If you're changing the M/C you'd might as well update those too.

    Yeah I hadn't thot about the hoses. This just happened since it's been sitting- the brakes worked fine all summer, so I figure it's a seal bypassing... I have had very little luck rebuilding brake parts so will go with a replacement if I must.
    Rear brake power is MINIMAL. Does anyone make some soft, grippy shoes that you know about?
    If not, I'll likely replace them with new and sand them just for drill. I think this bike was neglected for a long time before I got it.

    If you haven't looked at the rear shoes, do so right away. You could be riding around on a ticking time bomb: http://xjbikes.com/Forums/viewtopic/t=15874.html

    REBUILD the master cylinder, caliper and replace the lines. All at the same time. Here's why: if you do it "piecemeal" whatever component you don't attend to becomes the new weak link in the system. Rebuild only the master cylinder, the caliper will start dragging. Only rebuild the caliper and M/C and you chance bursting a line.

    Plus, the 650 Max has the pivoting caliper. The pivot components will need attention.

    If you don't simply rebuild the whole system, you're gonna be fighting with it for a while, honest.
