    Hi guys.
I had my front wheel off and I've got it back together, except the brake caliper brackets are hitting the rotors when I tighten down the bolts. All the bolts have been replaced by somebody else and they all have different amounts of washers on the bolts. I've tried with/without washers and also with washers between the bracket and fork without success. Guess I'm asking is there supposed to be a washer inside or just 1 on the outside. The left bracket actually shows that it was grinding on the rotor at one time but I didn't hear it when riding this past year. Thanks guys

Thanks. So it runs a lock washer then a regular washer. Maybe I don't have the wheel on all the way. Like it's not centered or something. I'll mess with it tomorrow.

Ok, well my fender is definately tweaked. So I took off the fender and put the brakes on, and only the right side bracket is hitting the rotor now. May have to put a small spacer on the inside of the fork. Something must be bent a little. The space between the rotor and the fork is not even on both sides. Guess it's good that I have awhile to figure this out.

On my 700 and Radian, there is a spacer on the right side between the wheel and the fork. I don't know if a 650 is the same.

Well, figured out why my bike cost $600 haha. Something is definately bent on the front end. The forks are definately not straight. The space between the left fork and rotor is 1/4 inch and the space between the right fork and rotor is about 3/8 inch. The left caliper bracket is not hitting the rotor, but the right is. I put a washer on the inside between the right fork and the bracket and it almost works. Still hits the bracket a little. I could grind it down and make it work, but it still has something goofed up in the front. I'm guessing this is why it felt like it was all over the place on the highway.
My plans for restoring this thing may have come to a halt. Hopefully I can ride it this year back and forth to work.

If it is bent forks it shouldn't be too costly to get new ones. You would probably need to pull them anyway to replace seals. They are usually shot by now. Once apart lay the tubes on a flat surface and roll them.

first make sure all the hardware on the front axle is all there and in the right order. if the speedo drive tabs missed the slots on the wheel it could cause this.
if that all checks out, look at one fork at a time.
loosen the bolts on the triple clamps and put some oil on the clamp, now spin the fork back and forth, if it's bent it will get tight then loose. tighten it back up, do the other side, see what you get.

Ok, sounds like a plan. My bike has been down before, but I don't think it was too bad. All the axle stuff is in right and the speedo is in the slot. Probably has a bent fork. I'll check for that tomorrow. Thanks for the advice.
