XJ in the wilderness

    I'm thinking of biking around the globe, top to bottom and then up the other side. Maybe not all in one go, depends on the costs and family stuff, but I getting to the old codger stage soon and want to do something reckless before I RIP (Rust In Pieces.) I would like to take along my xj550 but wondered if it was too heavy for the Canadian Wilderness. Has anyone travelled the Dempster Highway from Inuvik to Dawson City, or around Yellowknife? Or perhaps you've had some experience of traveling hundreds of miles on shale roads? If so I'd like to hear from you.
    Maybe route is Yukon, Montanna, follow the Mississippi, then towards Texas, Mexico, Costa Rica, Panama, Chile, Argentina, New Zealand, Australia, Thieland, China (if they let me), Siberia, Russia, Finland, Sweden, Norway, Denmark, Holland, Belgium, France and home again in England. Maybe get to say hello in person to a few of you, but it'll take a while to organise and I'm not even sure where to start. (Not Prudhoe Bay everyone does that)

    for real off road its a bit too heavy for me,

    that why i just bought me a dual purpose bike!

    and if come by central america let me know ok?

    i met some americans(nc) yesterday onroute to argentina

    their truck was oover heating and was puting a electric fan.

    Thanks for the info Secaman, I'll try and look you up when I pass through. My fear too that the xj is ok for tarmac but a bit heavy for gravel roads.

    we do have roads and u could use any of them!

    I used to live on a decently maintained/graded gravel road w/ my XJ750rh. It was fine, if a little squirrely. Moreso if it was muddy. Now, a plain ol' dirt road might be an entirely different matter.

    If I were taking a trip around the world I would try to get a 1990 to 1994 BMW R100GS. My uncle has a 1991 that he has had sine new and has put 93,000 miles on it. It is very hard to break this bike.

    yeah from the minimal experience i have with the bmw's they seem pretty bulletproof as well
