What is the best way to ship an entire engine?
How is it packaged? What carrier did you use?
    What is the cost?
Any information you all have would be appreciated!

strap it to a pallet and build a box around it. that is how I received a couple Volkswagen engines a few years back.

Strapping or Banding the Plant to a Shipping Pallet is a must.

Terminal to Terminal shipping is the most cost effective.
Deliver the load to a local shipping terminal.
Let the recipient pick it up at the destination terminal.

Pick-up and Delivery costs - Point to point - adds destination and handling fees which are usually quite expensive.

This is a good example of how shipping any LTL (less than truckload) load works. The process is pretty much the same even for shipping a whole bike; you go through a "freight agent" (like uship.com) they bid out the job and see who'll do it and for how much. You get to pick who to use.

+1 on Fitz's recommendation using uship. I have used it twice with great service and really affordable fees.

I got my '83 from Lake Geneva Wisconsin to me here in rural Michigan for under $300.

I liked being able to "cross examine" the carrier beforehand; and they did an excellent job especially in regard to working directly with me.

    That's why we're here.

Keep us posted or even write up a piece for the "Service, Online, Retail Shop Review" forum.

Last engine I got, they used an old tire to set the engine inside of, then the whole thing was strapped to a pallet and covered with stretch wrap. Was a generic shipping company, not sure who since it was dropped off while at work.
