are the carbs for an air cooled 86 xj700 the same as the 85 xj700? They're both hitachi 33mm
this is probably a stupid question. just kinda freaking out because i broke an ezout in my pilot screw trying to be a hero. I'm not sure the machine shop is an economical route and i found a set on c-list for an 85 xj700, i have an 86

    thanks much!

Yes they are, with the exception that the 85 carbs have an extra port (on each carb) for what is probably emissions control reasons. This brass port....which is just below and off to the side of the mixture screw boss o the carb bodies....can be blocked off with what amounts to a rubber cap (similar to what is used on the intake manifolds vac port).

There is a difference between the California and non-California carbs in those years, too, but once again, it is the inclusion (or not) of an extra vac port on the #2 carb body that can be capped off.

A machine shop shouldn't cost near what a rack of carbs does but I am looking for a spare rack just to have on hand. You might want to send a pm to bigfitz and Pollock asking about having a machine shop extract that screw and chasing the threads for you.

I'd be interested in the old set.
