new to the site

hi everyone, I'm new to the site. I have a 1982 xj750j with 11,200 miles on it. I have owned this bike since 1989. untill 2001 it was run every year. but I got busy with my family, and the bike sat. this year, with the price of gas, I decided it was worth, putting some effort into getting it running again. this forum helped a bunch. I would have never dared drill out the plugs to get at the pilot jets. but that's what it took to get it running again.
I will take some pictures when I get a chance.

 

Welcome to the forum! Glad we could help. At least with the plugs on you knew that the pilot mixture screws would be in good shape!

 

only thing now is to get the carbs adjusted, and synced. I just don't trust myself to do it, and the only person around here that can do it, is busy till next year...

 

To tune up those carbs (assuming you cleaned them up real good) you should synchronize and colortune. I just posted the link to a colortune in another thread and you reap the benefits of ctrl-V memory!

As far as synching goes, it's real easy. Build yourself a manometer (search the forum for details) and have at it. Both colortuning and synching are easy with the correct tools and a bit of knowledge.

I'm just pumped. here I thought the carbs were way out of adjustment. I'm on my 3rd tank of gas, I put on 35 miles last night, and this morning when I drove it, it was idleing high, so I pulled over and reached for the idle adjuster. a couple of turns and it was purring just like it was new. I took it for a quick ride over my lunch break, and wow, I don't think I need any more adjustments. probably wouldn't hurt to do the color tune and carb sync. I'll keep it in mind. but right now, I'm really pleased with how it's running.
