I'm not sure what its worth. I probably wouldn't take less than $1000, but I think it's worth that. New tires, 24,000 miles. Very reliable. Adult owned/ridden. What do y'all think?

Well, since you asked, here's what I think:

I wouldn't call it Showroom stock----

    The grips are not original
brake lever color has worn/bare spots
Tank badge on at least the right side is missing
Right side cover badge is missing
Some oxidation is evident on some of the pipes, and the engine guard
Appears to have some dings or swellings on the muffler
Clearcoat is faded on the top of the fork slider
    Seat looks faded
    Rear shock spring looks oxidized

What is the condition of the guage faces?

Have you checked and adjusted the shim clearances?

THAT all being said, I don't feel that the price is out of line, though..... if it's running, carbs cleaned, shims adjusted, brakes in top shape, clean title, etc......

I would have to agree.... I would not call it showroom at all! If someone offers you $800 I would take it...

Although a sharp looking bike, it's not showroom condition.

I'd pay $1000 for an XJ that's solid & ready to ride, that includes tires (how old are they, how worn, etc.?) & brakes (how old are the lines, how bad are the pads & shoes, have they ever been serviced?).

If the bike needs new lines, pads, valve shims, etc. (basic maintenance stuff), I'd be at $600 provided it runs & rides, probably because I'm going to put another $500 or so into it to make sure it's roadworthy.

There is a LOT more to old motorcycles than looks. Not out to bash the bike, but it's the little stuff (that really actually is big stuff) that really adds up quick.

If it starts, runs and (seemingly) rides fine, $800 max (as long as it makes good compression numbers.) It still needs all the "standard stuff" to properly recommission it.

As a SELLER (not a buyer), I would expect to be able to sell that for at least $1400, in Austin, Texas (context matters....).

I paid $800 for my 750 with 14k miles always stored indoors and very rust free. of course it needed brake and carb work and new tires.

I said showroom stock, not showroom condition. It's been riden regularly since it was new. Just not ridden a lot. At least once a month since new. Always maintained, but not upgraded.
It runs perfect, nothing wrong with it other than 32 years.

    There you have it.

Not "wrong" but it's going to need brake lines, master cylinder and calipers rebuilt, new pads, rear shoes, clutch friction plates, fork seals, probably fork springs, rear shocks, valve cover gasket and "donuts" plus a few shims, new rubber bits in the carbs, tank badges and a lot of TLC before it's reliable enough to ride safely and use as intended.

As I said, a proper recommissioning. Price tag: $600 ~$800 minimum.

Add that to what you expect to get. Which is why I said $800 max.

    I appreciate all the advise.
So, ask $1000 and take $800 is the plan.
    Thanks.

    JD,

IMO our re-commissioned bikes don't sell for what they're actually worth. If you sell it to a list member as is you'll do good to get $800. If you sell it on E-bay, Craigslist or Other there is a possibility you could get more than $1k. As you know it will be unlikely the E-bay, Craigslist or Other buyer will know what is required to actually re-commission one (including the 6 ~ 8 bills). If you do not sell it to a list member IMO you should tell them about this Forum. There might be a hand full of these bikes out there in similar running condition and being as well kept maintenance wise as our bikes but again that is a very small percentage. Good Luck with the sell.

Spend about 2 hours detailing it before taking your "Craigslist" pictures.
    Blow a can of "Tire Foam" . . . pick an un-cluttered back ground . . .
