hey there xj fans, I just found and joined this site.I'm hoping that I might be able to help any one the best that I can, but at the moment I need help!
I just recently purchased an 86 maxim x 700.My qustion is regarding high performance ignition coils, like accel, or dyna. Has anyone out there had any experience putting these coils on there maxim x? I did see some pics in the gallery of a sweet maxim x with accel coils. What I'd like to know is which coils will work better and does any one know how much voltage resistance does a maxim x have. I know that accel does have coils for a cdi application, but will these work well on my bike? :?:

Both Accel and Dyna make replacement coils for the XJ's.
Asking which works better is a matter of personal taste - both are excellent replacements to the stock coils. Note though that neither mount up nicely in the stock locations - some modifications and/or fabricating of mounts is going to be needed.
Several people have done it on various bikes, the only X I know of for sure is by HAP over on the XJ-Owners email list (he's not on here). I've seen his install - quite nice. I'll see if I can dig up some info on his for you.

Nope - no need for rejetting just because of ignition coils - they just provide a stronger spark and possibly a microscopically longer spark duration. Oh, and the ability to use and replace your own spark plug wires easily.

If you've also changed the air filter and/or the exhaust however -- then you're probably looking at jetting. I've got a K&N air filter in mine, and an aftermarket MAC 4-into-1 exhaust, and had to install a jet kit to get it running nice again.

I've use accel "super coils" on seca xj650r and they do seem to work well. I never got them to fit where the stock ones went so I mounted them above my header to the frame where the horns were kinda. I've had a lot of people tell me how good they look there and if you use the two top threaded holes that already exist and tap two small holes in the frame you will have a very solid mount for them. The instuctions recomend re jetting your carbs if they are not already. I already had a stage 1 and 3 jet kit in place so i had no problems there, not only do they add to the apearance of your bike they do add to the proformance as well. You can find the accel coils at mawonline.com for a 119$ wich is the cheapest place you will find them i'm pretty sure.

I used a K&N OEM drop-in on mine - never really liked the look of the pods.

Those instructions that recommend re-jetting with new coils are just marketing hype -- don't worry about it.

Once you've got the new coils, balance the carbs and then use a colourtune plug to see how your mixtures are - that's what'll tell you if you need to re-jet or not.
