So I was going to adjust a few valves in the engine since the previous owner said it was done not too long ago. What a lie! All 8 are so tight I cannot get a feeler gauge under them at all. Now mine only goes to .004 so I will begetting a different gauge that goes to .001 tomorrow. However, my setup is as follows:

    Intake 270, 270, 275, 275

    Exhuast 275, 275, 270, 270

I put the 270 where the 275 were and they are still too tight for the feeler to move under the cam lobe. I was hoping there was some folks here that had some much thinner ones lying around that I can use to get my setup right. If need be I will return them, or maybe a local member. I am in Blackstone Virginia about 45 minutes from Richmond. I run my own shop but have not had this issue with all of the valves being so tight that I cannot use another shim in the bike to gauge what shim I will need to make it right. Darn valves and their tightening over time!!!

Thank you very much. That helps a ton. I am going to order some from chacal and do the turn in program with him to get money towards the shims I need. I really wish folks would understand routine maintenance. It really does make it that much harder on those purchasing used bikes. But hey, at least I am my own mechanic, haha.

On the flip side that is how you can find an old xj for $300 service valves, clean carbs and have a running bike.

Don't get annoyed at the valve clearances tightening over time...... That's exactly how they were designed to work. It's the darn people that never check them that is the problem.

Now, dumb question...... Is your set of feeler gauges metric? Another dumb question-- was you bike overnight cold when you checked the clearances, or had you been running it at all?

Yeah I bought it for $175 for a Bobber project because the guy couldn't get it running right. I knew the co engines had shims and he mistakingly told me that the valves were non adjustable . I right then knew what the problem was. I did find a 260 shim amongst my pile of old stuff and used that to gauge them. I have ordered a whole set from Chacal. Thanks guys. One man's mistake is another man's virtue.
