I read all the posts on re- routing the original clutch cable when installing Euro Spec handlebars (lower bars). Specifically under the gas tank! I'm looking for a solution that keeps the cable from sticking way up in the air behind my gauge cluster,( Very Ugly).Any tricks or info. from someone who has done this? Pics would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks for your help!

    WHOOPS! It's a 1981 XJ 650 Midnite Maxim!

You can easily re-route the choke and throttle cables to eat up slack; but you may need to replace the clutch cable with a shorter one. When I put Euro bars on my 550 Secas (which came with the same handlebar as the 550 Max) I replaced the clutch cable and upper brake line with appropriately shorter pieces.

Thanks for Info. Looking for source/supplier of a shorter clutch cable that would work on my 81 XJ650 Midnite Maxim. MotionPro? or did you use a cable off another bike that worked? Seca, XS? :?

I too would be interested in knowing what clutch cable works better with euro bars. Been using the original, rerouted cable with my euro bars for a year and think it's time to update.

I ended up rerouting clutch cable under the tank to take up the slack after mounting my euro bars. I could not locate a shorter cable anywhere. I e-mailed MotionPro about the cost of a custom made cable and never heard back from them. I'm putting a 1/4 fairing on bike so the long looking brake cable will be hidden anyway!

Good info. was had from BigFitz about rerouting. Good Luck finding shorter clutch cable. Please share info./source if you locate a shorter cable. I bet many XJ650 Maxim owners would be interested including me!

Measure and mark overall length of needed clutch cable. Take it to local bicycle shop and pay few bucks to have end clipped and refitted. I read this in another post on here a while back.

The "brake cable" isn't a cable it's a HOSE (except 750 Secas) and if it hasn't been replaced it should be and then you can get a shorter one from XJ4Ever.

In my case, I was putting Euro bars on 550 Secas. I found the 750 Seca clutch cable to be the perfect length AND have the proper/nearly identical inner cable-to-sheath ratio. I was able to re-route the throttle and choke cables to eat up the extra; and as I said, the upper brake hoses were replaced with custom-made shorter ones. My mods gotta look "factory" or I don't do them.

I just swapped out the clutch and throttle cable on my 81 Xj650 with new cables for an 750 SECA - they are almost perfect with the drag bars, they probably could be another 2 inches shorter without a problem but anymore wouldn't give enough slack for turning.
