"My black ones over on ponies ... about 19hp over....
Never bent a valve on a yami from revving it yet unless something else went bad wrong and caused it (OK so there was that one time I had an exhaust valve hang down but that was literally a broken valve spring) ... Only time(s) you'll see smoke are: if you have blow-by which you would be aware of from a compression check anyway... oil building in the head... bad valve seals.... PCV pissing oil into the airbox (refer to excessive blow by).....stuff like that
With the Maxims that's why I leave the valve springs stock tension/strength- I can rev one to 16k with just shims under the springs - but the block cant take it (insufficient oil passages to the crank) - nor can the timing chain guide arms (dont know why but those heads wear a set of arms bad - I've seen em with ruts dug out of em at 30,000 miles versus most (keyword there=most) other Yamis you generally wont see that until the engines long puked from wear and tear.....On the water cooled ones (X's)... yahhh the stock seals in that water pump are prone to premature wear at normal rpm....
I still have a "parts bike that lived" (N) that I want to try a set of Ehrlich heads and cams on but it's gonna be a while - I have the head and cams but all the nitpicky stuff like shift forks etc I still have to find for it - Blocks OK but the rest of the bikes been sacrificed for the other 3 I've built out for me personally (one of those was another parts bike that lived - sold to pay for parts on the "free stash principle").. The handful I've done for other people have all been pretty boring stock crap with maybe some bolt on mods (people are cheapskates on engines but they'll spend gazillions on pretty up crap)..... Other than Darryls - that's where we found out 12.5:1 was just a bit much for pump gas - but it runs wonderfully on 100LL.. Perfect on the interstate but will overheat in town if you dont keep it moving (we still haven't found or made him a bigger radiator 2nd fan helped but it'll still overheat if you get caught in stop and go"

I would think the valves would float and they would stop revving beyond maybe 14K or so. I accidentally ran my 550 to 12K once and it's still OK but it's not something worth repeating.

...at 16000 RPM would it make any difference if you slipped the clutch or just dumped it?? ;-) ;-)

Wow, nice way for this dickhead to freewheel that engine.

Cracking the throttle open while under load is 100% OK. In neutral? Eh... valvetrains & rotating assemblies don't like that.

Over-revving an engine is not a wise thing to do.

Over-revving an engine without a load is a stupid thing to do.

    Even for an X-Bike, ...

Throw a Rod and you go from Runner to Parts Bike.

Here are some pics I borrowed. This is the head of a Honda NC23 (CBR 400) after being over-revved a few times.

And the top of the piston,

The gauge on the right of the cluster has a red line on it for a reason.
