I take it the shifter cover hasnt been removed in 30 some years so i think that is the reason why it is stuck on the bike seemingly almost glued on there now. I took all the bolts off of it and tried to pry it with a flathead screwdriver, tap it with a mallet and various other methods to no avail. Any ideas how i can unstick it to remove it? thanks

rubber mallet, prying will only mess up the mating surfaces

I tried smacking it with a rubber mallet but it didn't make any effort to come off

Sometimes putting a junk bolt in the hole or small screwdriver and prying different directions works. Not too hard, and only deep enough to engage with the outer cover.

There's a "that's what she said" joke in there somewhere.
