Hi everyone im new so hello
    Iv a 88 xj900f witch I really like
About a week ago 5th gear gave up on it the engine had 100k on it so
Decided to buy another engine from a breaker engine turned up put it in and I think the head gaskets gone on it its ticking a little and abit of oil is coming out aswell witch has really pissed me off!
What to do!!!! It has a 14 day warranty god nos what the guy will say?
Or fix it! does the engine have the come out again to get the head off?
Is it worth trying to re torque the head bolts
    Any advise would be appreciated
    Pete

The head gaskets not a big job, the ticking might be the valves need adjusting
I don't think re torquing the head will help. Depends how much you paid and what the bore is like but if its in reasonable shape you might just need to do the valves and gasket and you will have a good motor. Due to their age there probably is not that many real good second hand motor about so what ever you get you will most likely to need to do some work on.

I had little mess about with it out side work at lunch time the tick is coming from the exhaust manifold donut at the same side so not so bad
I sprayed some spray greese on the gasket seam when it was running and it is bubbling ever so slightly at the front right hand corner!
Tryed tightening the head nuts just out of curiosity at that side and the went a quarter turn or so rest are totally solid! maybe that was the problem to begin with but its possible the gasket is shot now also look like the heads been off at some point in it life!
It starts easy and runs well!
Breaker told me it had 40k on it and I paid £150 plus postage for the engine witch isn't really a great deal!
I do think its abit pointless moaning at the breaker as there all getting abit long in the tooth now!
My other engine ran well just the gearbox side of things was very worn!
Gasket doesn't look a big job just cam chain n timing look a pain done plenty car engines but never had a head off a 4 pot bike
    Cheers Pete
