Second gear won't engage? Is the bike toxic, or worthwhile?

So I know he's asking too much, but what I want to know is how bad is it? Is the bike not worth buying to fix the transmission? I'm not looking to flip it, but rather just fix it up for personal use - I'm interested in making a track racer out of a Seca. Mostly for fun, but partly to learn on.

I had seen this one as well. Seems like you could talk the guy down a bit. My issue with PO's is that if they know what the issue is, why not have it repaired?

Looks great, and for about 7-800 it would be worth it to me as long as everything else on the bike checks out.

I know what you mean. I see half finished basket cases all the time, and they say they "just gotta put it back together" but that they lost the steam. Makes me want to offer to fix it for them for a fee.

And you're right, that bike does look nice. I wish these finds were in my county though. I know, I have to put in some kind of effort if I want a bike. It's not like my maxim was in the same county I live in when I bought that.

thats alot of work to pull the engine to try and repair the trans. if it was 300-400 that may be worth it.

somethings not right about the engine, the small covers don't match. the back brake pedal is bent. the seat's not original, looks like a cover.
not going into second and popping out are way different, you can undercut the second gear drive dogs and fix the popping out but the shift fork will probably be shot too.
not going into second could be a bent fork of the starter chain guide could just be in pieces

I'll take that as a vote of toxic. I didn't notice the mismatching covers and the bent pedal, but to hear it, it sounds like a crashed bike.

I'm guessing it was a rear end collision, hence the drive shaft and the splayed nature of the mufflers (see the picture of the rear end). And then it fell on the right side.

The mufflers stick out like that because they're aftermarket mufflers; the stockers have a "kink" in them that keeps them tighter to the bike.

I'm betting Polock's right about the cause of the second gear issue; the primary chain guide is probably beginning to break up.

I suspect it fell over on its left side; the RH crank end cover is correct, the left one is the incorrect one. It also appears that somebody spray-painted the motor.
