    Hi,

I've spraypainted the aircooled cilinder of my xj700s.
There appeared to be wedge-shaped rubbers between the cooling fins everywhere. I suppose that serves a purpose, so where exactly should I put them back?

    Thanks!

They go between every other fin (typically) pick the longest, deepest fins.
Have a look at some pictures in the "gallery" for examples.

The purpose is to quiet the ringing of the motor - to absorb noise.

Aircooled motors use the rubber so the fins do not vibrate and break.

Actually TimetoRide is correct. Not all air cooled bikes have rubber dampeners between the fins. In fact most don't. Typically the high revving inline fours have them.

Vacuum line is a suitable replacement.

That is correct. They are there to dampen high frequency resonance.

I blew mine out of the fins with a pressure washer a year or two ago and lost them did seem to make any difference to the noise of the motor and have not broken off any fins so far
