    Hi,
Just today I was out driving and my bike quit running while going down the road. The bike is an 82 XJ 650. After the bike quit I was able to get it into a parking lot and tried to start it again, nothing happened. I can't get it to turn over and it wont pop start.

I'm thinking that my timing chain went and the motor is seized and might be ruined.

Don't jump to big conclusions like that.

First, check your main fuse. Start there.

What makes you think the engine is seized?

Next, where in NY are you? If you're near Utica, I'm just south of there.....
Plus.....Central NY Carb Clinic is coming up June 14..

I'm in Morrisville NY, I believe it was the timing chain because it has been making some noises from that.

    Thanks Hogfiddles,

Just checked the main fuse and that fixed it, now I just have to get the noise that the engine has been making fixed.

A loose cam chain typically makes a buzzing or growling sound rather than a metallic "clang".

Here's what happened to me when I was riding my 82 650 Maxim... It just quit running, it turned out to be the kick stand switch, it was "sticky". A shot of WD-40 fixed it. Remember this if it happens again and your fuse isn't blown.

Ya it makes the buzzing growling noise at around 5-6 thousand rpm, I am hoping it is just an adjustment and I don't need a new chain and guides.

I'd be more inclined to think that it's:
    1 a loose heat shield
    2 a loose exhaust collar
3 a pipe inside has separated

But ill take a listen and see if I can narrow it down

Lucky you that can have Dr. Fiddles check your bike. It is an 11 hr. drive from me.

Ya thankfully he is right down the road from me, he took one look at it and found that my right heat shield was loose. Took him next to no time to diagnose it. If I was by myself I would probably be tearing the engine apart by now to do a full rebuild. :D
