    Hey guys,

So I'm looking for a tach cable that's about 5" shorter than stock for the XJ650 1981 -- I need one about 24"

Are these things made to any kind of industry standard with the fixings on each end or do I have to look for one specific to Yamaha and/or XJ's?

I asked Len but no dice...

    Thanks
    Rich./

Tach cable should be pretty standard. It's not going to have all the right elbows and such, but it will work.

Check out dime city cycles, I'm sure you can find something there.

Yeah I found some options here but they don't say how long they are.

Anyone know the length of an SR500, XS650, XS850,TX etc tach cable and if they will fit the XJ650 for sure?. Some of the photos here look to be the same for different types so I don't trust them.

Awesome - if it fits then that should work.. I'll buy it and see - for that price I can ebay it if not or just put it on the shelf for the next one..

Thanks dude - you really helped me out on this one... :)

Well it was too late - I bought it - and you're right the end to the engine-block is wrong. I'm guessing there are no "standards" for this.

Wondering if it's the same across the XJ line and if any of the other XJ's have shorter tach cables but I'm struggling to find this out.

Ask a shop that does tach and speedometer repair. They can make drive cables to length.

I can go this route - I just was looking to not spend the money on a custom cable. This is kinda the point - I could have ordered a customer cable day one but I'm trying to find out if other XJ model have a tach cable that is shorter than the one on the 650 H - preferable around 24, and if they are interchangeable on the engine side.

I mentioned having a cable made because in your first post you said that you contacted Len. If Len doesn't have a pre-made tach cable for an XJ in the length that you need, then nobody will.

Fair enough - I'm just trying to find out though if the cable for all the XJ's are interchangable and if any of them are shorter than the one on the XJ650 '81.

The original tach cable for the 550s is slightly shorter (not 5") but Yamaha, in their infinite wisdom, have decided that they would substitute the 650 cable for use on the 550s as well. So it's hard to actually buy a "genuine" 550 cable unless you find a used one.

All of the Yamaha cables of the era should be pretty much the same; we need somebody with an XS400 to measure theirs. (The distance from the instrument to the motor is likely quite a bit shorter.) If nobody jumps in, PM JPaganel or mtnbikecrazy55, they've both been working on XS400s recently.

The XS cable has the wrong fitment at the engine block - I bought on - it doesn't fit. :( - only $10 so it's going on my spares shelf for project 200.
