I recently bought a 85 Yamaha xj700 the moment I bought it I drove it home and started chopping away. I took out the original air filter and replaced it with air pods. After the air pods were installed I took it for a test run. It started bogging out really badly and revving really high in idle. So I then bought a stage 3 dyno fuel jet kit replacing the fuel jets and setting everything ie air/fuel mixture. The bike runs great now and fast, except when idling or when I pull the clutch while coasting. It revs really high and stays there. I've cleaned the carbs and they are spotless. Unscrewed the idle screw as far as it will go. I ensured the cable wasn't sticking. I also took the cable off the carbs to see if it was the throttle cable. Still revving so high. Did some research, even though I shouldn't have, and I read that I should take the carbs apart to see if the butterflies were closing all the way. Noticed that they weren't so after multiple tries I finally got three of the four to close and the one that's not closing is almost impossible to close. I obviously don't know everything about bikes but I need some help. I just want to ride. My next step is to sync the carbs. I have the sync set for it. But I don't wanna do this and it still not work. Is there anything else anyone can suggest? Anything will help.

General consensus is that pods are not a good idea.

    Hitachi HSC32 carbs?
#3 butterfly is controlled by the idle mixture screw.
Take carbs off and do THIS. I used 1/4" strips of card stock instead of the paper clip.

Also if you removed the butterfly valves from their pivot shafts you must make sure the valves are going back on in the correct orientation/ location AND you may have to reseat them multiple times until they are correct. (You did take notes and pics when you disassembled and kept each carbs components separate?) I had to reseat two of mine several times before they would close proper.

Back up and get the valves in spec before trying to sync.

It will need to be sync'ed; but only after you re-visit the carbs and make sure everything is 100% including FLOAT LEVELS. Then get a good accurate bench sync (which does include making sure the butterflies can all close properly.) Did you replace the throttle shaft seals since you had it that far apart?

Did this "Stage 3 jet kit" include the drilling of anything in the carbs?

Despite the claims of "the kit" you will probably have some further re-jetting to do; however until everything else is right you won't get anywhere. And step 1 is valve clearances.
