Hey! First off all of you are awesome! I just bought a XJ750 off of craigslist, paid too much then paid some dude to do a bunch of work on it.
    Lame.
Now I'm $1500 in, but the bikes runs great and I love her.

Question: Last item to deal with immediately is my exhaust. The muffler is almost rusted through and about to fall off. Looks like I will have to replace the whole exhaust system? I've heard alot about MAC 4 to 1 and people gets those. Wouldn't mind terribly the investment if it will last. My idea is to get the exhaust and switch to PODs since I will probably have to rejet the engine anyway. Anyone have any advice besides "You're screwed"? Haha, i've read a million times so far that pods are a huge pain. But if I'm set on rejeting, any tips?

    Thanks!

A slight bit of clarification, if you would be so kind.

There are usually two of them. The four header pipes meet at a unit known as the "collector", and the two mufflers bolt into the other side of that.

Was an aftermarket 4:1 exhaust already installed previously? Or are you referring to the collector being rusted out?

Aftermarket mufflers can and have been installed on these bikes; from what I understand, it requires a bit of fabrication, but it's doable. How many of them you'll need depends on which setup you already have. :)

As for the pods, I have no clue whatsoever.

Its the original stock exhaust. So far it looks like only the left side is rusted out.

Why he is asking is because you can replace mufflers without changing header and collector and would be cheaper than that Mac setup

my advice is to find a used exhaust and just replace it
as for the pods... don't bother
they are not worth the work

I'm planning on replacing my stock exhaust on my XJ650 with a 4-1 too and I've done a lot of research.

I've found that there are a lot of 4-1 headers out there that aren't well made and/or designed to fit well. Do some googling and be sure to read others reviews. I haven't landed on one yet but I have some options.

You said you were going to re-jet anyway for pod etc so perhaps this is right for you but as I'm sure you've read 1000 times - pods are a nightmare and getting it does right can be very difficult - add a new exhaust in the mix too and you're definitely biting off a lot. If you've set your heart on pods the so-be-it but ask yourself why? If you're trying to increase performance then good-luck because you will most likely reduce performance by adding pods - you'll never pull the same clean stationary air to each carb as well as the stock airbox does. if it's for looks then that's fine - it's your bike.

You could just replace the baffle/muffler with a stock replacement or go aftermarket 4-2 so you keep the same characteristics at least at the dirty side...

If you wind up with a 4-1 header there's nothing stopping you from replacing the muffler at some point with something a little better than the one that came with it.

I replaced my MAC muffler with a mid-pipe + Supertrapp. The fact you can adjust back pressure and well, noise for that matter makes it pretty handy.

Here's a dumb video i took a few weeks ago, don't laugh at the hanger :)

    Idling...
