Hi all, does anyone know if you can get a higher geared Differential for the Maxim X700 Water cooled model.
Or are they all the same through the XJrange of shaft drive models.
It's just that my bike seem to be working hard and not going very fast.

    Mike.

If you have a water cooled 700, it should run like its arse was on fire and its head was catchin'. Are your valve clearances in spec? Are the carbs clean and floats set properly? There is no reason to change the gearing.

As far as I know, the gearing is what it is. It's a high revving motor that runs like a scalded cat. You just have to get used to running it hard.

Thanks for the info, it's probably the fact that I don't like revving it.

XJs hit their power band at about 5000 rpm. If you are shifting at 3000-3500 rpm or lower, it will be a dog. This ain't your daddy's V-twin. Rev it up, play it loud, have some fun. These motors sound so awesome at 9 grand, it is a REAL rush.

You have in your XJ what is essentially the same engine as was put in this wee beasty.

You are riding a sportscruiser. Rev that motor.

I'm not sure why you guys refer to the final drive as a "diff". Technically speaking a "diff" has 6 gears inside the case where as I hope you all know that there are only 2 gears inside shaft driven motorcycles. The only exception I know of is a German army BMW with a side car; it did have a "diff". Anyway FYI. Call what it you like, it makes no diff to me.

The majority of us don't. We call it the final drive, which is what it is. A lot of people who are unfamilliar with shaft driven motorcycles will refer to it as a differential out of familiarity with the term, and because it resembles the differential thhat would be found on a car.
