I not an 82 maxim 650 that has been sitting for two years. I was changing all the fluids. I went to change the oil filter and the bike that holds the housing on broke. And suggestions on how to get cover off and also extract the bolt. I'm new to these bikes.

Also does this cover need to come off to pull engine out. I planned on painting the engine.
    Thanks

The bolt is long and proprietary (you'll need to order a new one), but it's also the only thing holding the cover on. If you've broken off the bolt, the cover should come off pretty easily. Maybe try tapping it with a rubber mallet...

One other option to buying a new bolt would be to get the spin-on filter adapter kit so you can use regular can filters instead of element filters. If you decide to go to the spin-on adapter, you can then even take an angle grinder to the old cover, if necessary, to cut it off.

That's great advice. Thank you. I did cut the remaining piece of the bolt off with a grinder. Where can I get the can oil filter adapter? Sorry I'm very new to motorcycles.

If nothing else, just break the housing off too..... They are plentiful. Grab hold of the bolt ant turn it out. It's swimming in oil so it won't be stuck. Bolt are plentiful too.

Yep. Also, the drive shaft will go to a U-joint. Unbolt the U-joint and you shouldn't have much trouble after that. So long as you don't consider lifting engines heavier than dead priests to be too much trouble! ;)

The Oil Filter Bolt has a generous "Shouldered" area just beyond the Flats.

You can remove the Headers and get a Pipe Wrench to grab that Shoulder.

Well with some work of the grinder the drill and a hammer to break it free I managed to get the cover off with some serious persuasion. The cover is detroyed but I was planning on doing the spin on filter conversion anyway. Thanks for the help
