    Hi all,
Just wondering. I will be removing the gear linkage cover to get at the shift springs.
I am hoping one of the springs is broken. Just wondering.. How much oil will I lose when i remove the cover.? The XJ is too heavy to tilt over in my opinion.
So is it necessary for me to drain the sump or will I be able to catch the oil I lose when the cover is removed.?
    As always, Thanks gang.
    Morg.

Did you just do an oil change, and that's why you don't want to lose it? If you did, I agree...if you didn't, screw the oil it needs more.

When on the side stand, not much is going to come out. Never done it, but I'd imagine it's going to be like 1-2 quarts. You could probably get away with leaning it even further against a tree or pole or something, not all the way but enough. Have a friend help. These bikes aren't that heavy, but you'd better be kinda low on gas so it doesn't spill.

Might want to try rocking it back and forth while trying to shift? Clutch?

If he trys to remove the shift cover while on the sidestand all of the oil will drain (shifter on the left, sidestand on the left). If it's on the center stand most of the oil will drain.

OP, since you're uncomfortable tipping the bike over to the right, buy yourself a disposable aluminum pan at the gorcery store. Drain the oil, cover the pan with foil, and put the oil back in the bike when you're done. If you have concerns about getting crud into the oil you can get a filtering funnel at any decent auto-parts store, or farm store.

Hi lads and thanks for the advice.
Just wondering how the clutch would cause my XJ to be stuck in 1st. The cable seems fine and the clutch appears to be engaging in and out.
And rocking it back and forth while pulling the shift pedal to see if she will pop out of 1st.? I am assuming one of the springs has popped off the shifter or at worse a piece of plastic from the chain guide has broken off and lodged in the drum.

IIRC, there were cases in the past where shifting was stuck due to pieces of the cam chain guide that had broken off and lodged among the shifter forks.

The clutch? It wouldn't. Your other assumptions are likely correct; hopefully a spring in the "mousetrap" broke. If it is a crumbling chain guide, you may be able to pick the offending chunks out of the shifter forks through the access hole under the same cover.
