82 750 maxim handlebar mounts

    This should be easy but I just picked up drag bars (7/8") and I need to purchase the mounts. I can't find them for the life of me. Not looking for risers, just need to clear the center bolt on the triple tree.

    Can someone point me in the right direction?

    I ordered a used set of Virago clamps like these off Ebay that worked perfectly on mine:

    I had to use some bushings for a spacer to get clearance (see link in my signature).

    Or a set of aftermarket like these would probably do the trick (you just want to make sure the stud is long enough to go through the top of the triple tree):

    I search for 7/8" clamps in the motorcycle parts section should get you some good results.

    Also - I've seen other members on here with clearance issues on drag bars. Your controls might end up hitting the tank if you don't get some clamps with a couple inches of rise. Something more like this might get you enough clearance:

    Thanks for the links! I went with option #2, the aftermarket ones (liked the black). If the posts are not long enough I'll just head to the hardware store and pick up ones that fit. After I get the bars on I'll throw up some pictures.

    I did read that the drag bars were not clearing the tanks but I plan on swapping the takes at a later time and want to keep the bars as low as possible. For now I'll just have to be careful.

    Also, to remove some of the clutter in the front I want to relocate the choke to under the tank/seat.

    I've been wanting to do this for awhile too but just haven't gotten around to it. Let me know how it goes and, uh... pics or it didn't happen! :lol:

    I tried drag bars on my maxim 650 with stock tank. My controls hit the task with out risers. I haven't tried them yet with risers.

    My goal in the long run is to swap out the front forks and tank to give it a more aggressive look.

    Mechanically the only thing I've done in the past is change oil and break pads so I'm still taking baby steps. lol

    I'm sure you guys are going to see a ton of questions popping up in the forums with my name on them!

    Looking forward to your progress man - you definitely came to the right place. Here are some quick tips to hopefully help with the site and your bike:

    1. Add your bike info (Year, Make, Model, Engine size) to your signature. This is super helpful for anyone trying to answer your questions.

    2. This one was hard for me to accept but VERY important and you'll see it repeated all over this site: Your bike is over 30 years old and routine maintenance has probably been neglected for a good portion of it's life. Before you dump a lot of time and money into modifying it to make it look cool you should really focus on making sure it is safe and reliable. This means:

    * Check the Valve Clearances! Sounds scary if you've never done it but it's not that bad & can save you from blowing your engine.

    * Brakes! Old brake shoes in the rear can delaminate and cause your tire to lock up at high speed = not good.

    Also - 30 year old brake lines are going to fail when you need them the most (they were only designed to last for like 4 years).

    * Tires - they should have date codes and if they're more than 4-5 years old ore are bald/cracked/dry-rotted they can be very dangerous.

    Some other members might chime-in with other great advice but those are the big 3 to cover before you ride.

    3. Listen to the "XJ Wizards" - they know their stuff. Even if their answers come off as a little harsh at times - trust what they say and you will save yourself a lot of headaches.

    Ok just to update where I'm at with the risers. I got the set in the mail from the link posted but the bolts were bigger than what the triple tree could take. They were 12mm and the hole was fit for 10mm.

    Went to Home Depot bought new bolts and had to grind the head to fit the riser (they needed to be circular instead of hex and have one flat side to prevent the bolt from turning when seated in the riser)

    Had the clearance issue that everyone has warned about with the choke

    removed the stock mount and mounted it (temporarily) to the battery box under the seat. I'm using the stock cable just rerouted it back under the tank. I didn't feel like spending any money on a temp. solution so for now this will do the trick.

    I have easy access to the choke from the right side of the bike and it works great. Took me maybe 10 minutes to do (after I figured out where I wanted it to go). The bars do still make contact with the tank when slowly maneuvering but it's not an issue while riding.

    Gauges are in the mail and I'm still searching for the right headlight. Let me know what you think.

    The hand controls get their ground through the bars-clamps-trees-to frame. So you'll want to make sure the black paint on the clamps doesn't interfere with you control ground if you didn't already think of it.

    I did not think of that thank you. I noticed the brake light isn't working at the moment. Didn't have time to look into it.

    Thanks for the feedback Metal_Bob. I'll probably keep it there for a little while. If I move the battery II'll have to come up with a different solution.

    But coming I contact with fast maneuvering while riding would be a problem, as would the instantaneous fork flop immediately AFTER you put the bike onto the side stand and the step away juuuuust far enough NOT to be able to catch it In time before the tank catches it...
