I'm having a bad shim day

    Started to do my valve adjustments the other day and started with the following measurements. I put down what shims were installed. Only did the lash measurement on 3,4 intakes. Will definitely find out what shims are in there though for the next time.

    ______ Ex. ________In.___

    1.___.102/260____.102/280

    2.___.127/265____.102/280

    3.___.127/260____.127/NA

    4.___.1524/260___.127/NA

    So three are in spec and need to re-shim 5 of them. I had a couple extra shims that I was able to use. This left me with intake no 1 and 2 that I was not able to adjust until I get the proper shims.
    So I was 2 hours away in the big city and I made some calls. A dealership was willing to swap out some shims. I was able to pick up 4 shims (wanted to improve Ex 4 as well). Tried my first adjustment on intake no 1 and the shim just would not go in.

    Long story short, I finally realized the shims must be 29.9 mm dia. (Suzuki shims ) instead of 29 mm. What a pain! Thankfully, it doesn't look like I did an damage. Something to think about next time you swap out with a dealership. I won't take anything for granted next time.

    True dat!
    When I went to The Shop to get mine I brought my veneer caliper with me.
    Not that I don't trust the guys there, I just didn't want to make an unnecessary trip. Checked the dimensions right in front of the owner and he didn't balk at all.

    P.S. I did have to do the metric to standard conversion prior to going and had the decimal equivalents for both diameter and thickness written down.

    I will be taking my calipers with me as well after this experience. Funny thing, the guy took out his caliper and confirmed the thickness for me. Neither of us thought about checking the diameter. I told him 29 mm. Oh well, no big deal. I go into town once a week for work anyways. I'll deal with it once I'm back from my leave.

    That is strange, I recently bought Shims for a Suzuki KLR 650, they fit perfectly in my FJ600, they were 29mm.

    LOL, no worries. But you bring up a good point in case others don't know. The Kawasaki shims fit into our Yamaha's. Same with the BMW shims I think. As matter of fact, I used a couple of shims I had from adjusting my KZ last time which I was able to use on my XJ. Unfortunately, I am still shy by a couple of shims which I still need.

    @hogfiddles, Maybe I can send you an PM once I'm back from vacation. I currently have a 235, 240, 260, 265 and 280. Thanks
