My friend and I both have 1985 xj700 maxims....
The only difference is that his is liquid cooled and mine is an airhead.
His bike suddenly started jumping out of second gear.
Im sure someone here will know whats going on?

    Thanks.
    Ron.

Trouble going in to second, and jumping out of second are entirely different problems. Polock linked the info that the PO needs.

Would using a synthetic oil contribute to this problem at all?

    Not likely.

Yamahas popping out of second are caused either by worn dogs on the gear, bent shift fork, or a combination of the two. Dogs get stripped because of how they are designed, and possibly because of careless shifting.
