Well, I got my carbs cleaned and all my parts. I assembled them and performed the alignment but the #1 Carb butterfly keeps hanging and not allowing the piece that contacts the idile adjustment screw to come in contact. I loosened the butterfly and tried tightening it down but it just draws that piece away from the adjustment screw. The only other thing I noticed was I put new shims in. The others were a mess and I do have some play side to side. Not sure if it was there before I took the carbs apart. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Are you certain you re-assembled correctly? Did you use a piece of plate glass to align the four carbs as you re-assembled them? Did you bench sync the rack? Sounds like something is out of alignment or re-assembled incorrect if you are saying the #1 butterfly is preventing the sync screw from contacting the adjustment plate. Are the new shaft seals (i think you called them shims) correct for your model? Hope this helps.

    Try, try again?
Did you break the rack (separated all 4 carbs)?
You did keep all of carb 1 parts together and didn't mix up anything . . . right?

Make sure it isn't on backwards or upside down.
When I did mine (I did go to the Church), even still I could make out a very light witness mark on the shaft side of the butterfly. The butterfly's on my bike actually had small flats on one side of the butterfly, that was also used for correct orientation. I gently used some 600 grit emery and just touched the trailing edge of the bevels to remove any burrs that may have raised up - very, very gently.

So back to the try again thing. One of my butterfly's took 3 to 4 re-seatings before it would close properly. If I recall correctly, I would let it 'snap' closed with the screws loose and eventually it aligned proper.

    Good luck!

Thanks guys for the info. I was real careful about keeping all the parts segregated for each carb. I did mark the butterfly orientation and front or back along with the carb number. The shim is supposed to be the correct part. I will go back to the vendor and verify. I did have a good flat surface to align the carbs before tightening the screws. I ended up loosening all the butterflys and reseating them. I redid #1 carb 5 times and I got it to a point I can open and close all 4 butterflys. I attempted a bench synch using the 3x5 card stock. Only thing bothering me is the idle screw is almost all the way in to set the #3 carb. Something is still not right. Looks like I pull them apart again. What a pain.
