did you read there is a box of new parts valued at $1500 included?

versus buying the bike, and the new parts, not looking at a bad deal.

It does say Or Best Offer, does it not? Also, not terribly serious about selling, just willing to for the right price.

(not all parts included are pictured here, but most are)

If you're not interested or can't read, i guess you can buzz off and spare me the rhetoric.

the problem with custom is owner specific preferences, just cause someone thought it was cool, doesn't mean it isn't crap, try fixing the bike and it might be worth 1000

replace the mufflers, sand it down and paint it any other colour and it might sell,

Taste is always questionable, you're right.

Since I traded an old sailboat for this xj (my first), cosmetics were the least of my worries. It ran and had new tred.

Ive done plenty of work and documented it all.

The bike runs fine and is worth the $800-$1000 on the local market.

The box of new parts is worth the $1500 at retail.

If someone wants a roadworthy bike with a lot of the necessary parts to bring it up to full polish, they can make me an offer.

    FYI
When you are selling already purchased parts even if they are still in its packaging you won't be able to sell them at retail value.. its just realistic.

You should take the advice from the guy above to trash that ugly VW kadron cherry bomb mufflers and paint the bike all one color then you can aim for $2,500.

    Doesn't anyone make offers anymore?

I am not a retail chain and my prices aren't fixed. Make me an offer if you're interested. Lets negotiate.

As for the paint and pipes.. I can see getting a can of krylon and doing the tank and fenders.
Buying new pipes, though, for a bike I'm trying to sell, seems counter intuitive.

Besides, not everyone is an XJ purist, like folks on this forum, and might not mind the cherry bombs ;)

The paint job you got on it now is Whacked !!! ... and fugly
Makes the bike look worse than it is. .. it doesn't enhance or accentuate the bike whatsoever. It's going to be a tough sell.
Krylon is not a good idea unlesd you paint it professionally with base coat then clear coat ( 2 stage paint).. a pint of Nason paint can run you about $40.00 ... labor and paint about $100.00
Take an SOS pad and clean the cherry bomb from rust and built up gunk.

Then you can get a decent price for it.

Remember we men are visual creatures so it has to appetizing to the eyes first.

    Here's whats wrong with this scenario;

What you are selling is a $6-700 bike with maybe $800 worth of parts. As others pointed out, re-selling brand new parts in a bundle is a financial loser, better to sell them off individually on ebay, or else accept about 50% of what you paid. So a fair offer would be in the $1400-1500 range, and even that assumes you find a buyer who either knows XJ's and/or knows vintage bikes well enough to appreciate the value of the spare parts. You would probably get offers down to as low as $1000, but your asking price is too far out of line with that. Given that you clearly state that you are not serious about selling, why would someone waste time making a reasonable offer when you are likely to play the "c'mon man, you cant be serious" game if they call? Hell, you're doing it now.
If you don't want to sell it, don't list it. Playing the "I don't want to get rid of it, but I will for the right offer" card only works with something desirable. Either new and a hot model, or vintage and in stellar condition. If you want to sell it, mark it down to $1600 with the parts and entertain offers. I said before you'd get more selling the parts individually on ebay, but in reality at such a small volume you'd lose any additional profit on sellers fees.
    Good luck with the sale.

    Perhaps.

In criticism of P.T. Barnum, David Hannum once said, "There's a sucker born every minute."
Maybe one of the suckers out there wants to pay up.

If you're not that sucker, so be it. No need to lecture on the nuances of pricing to sell.

The fact is sellers aim high, buyers aim low, and deals are made in the middle.

Again, make me an offer if you're interested.

you're advertising to the wrong crowd on this forum, you see we know what its worth, take our advice ...or don't .

I'm beginning to think you know very little about the buy and sell trade, just cause you watch those t.v shows about bartering doesn't mean you know what you're doing.

paint it black, (spray bombs will be better than it is) then sell it to some highschool kid who has no clue what hes getting into and voila... another victim of the "Never finished" pile of parts. But who cares you made your money right?

fix it and keep it, or fix it and sell it. you'd be surprised what those parts will do to the value of the BIKE when they are installed.

You just don't get it do you ?
Are you a blonde ? Or pretending to be one...
Bigshankhank couldn't have put it any clearer and you still don't take his sound advice !!!

A sucker born every minute ?
Well then what are you ... A constant sucker that keeps on living and going like the Energizer bunny.

Maybe what you need is a blonde sucker to come calling and then you can whack him and tell him that Arnold Schwarzeneger rode this bike in the movie Terminator or have some famous football player autograph the tank.

You are not a serious seller because you said you weren't to begin with so why would anyone in their right mind even think of entertaining making an offer ?

    It's a Wash !!!

Still lecturing, eh? I feel like I've inadvertently enrolled in a MBA program here.. What do I owe for tuition?

Simply put, I'm not adjusting my ad just because some here think I should feel badly about the list price.

If someone wants to make an offer they feel is reasonable, they are welcome.

If not, I'll hang onto the bike, keep tinkering and be no worse for wear.

The hostility is palpable.. lighten up dudes.

you do know your spreadsheet only shows 175$ of parts, right?
not quite 1500$ but i don't want the parts anyhow.
i'am not really interested in buying another bike but for the right price i might.
so since your starting really high i'll start really low.
i'll give you 300$ if it has good compression and runs and shifts as it should, keep your parts.
    counter offer?

Non-running / parts bikes are selling for >300 locally on Craigslist. So, offer declined. But thanks anyway.

Also, the linked spreadsheet has 3 separate paginated tabs, located at the bottom left and titled PO 001, 002 and 003 respectively. Its all there.

This sort of crap is annoying. Shouldn't criticisms of item's offered for sale be handled via PM instead of in public where it creates the impression that this forum is full of toxic behavior?

Questioning the asking price of something is cool by me, but the name calling and vitriol is absurd.

One person posted a quote by Barnum, and another asked a question about hair color.....

well i look at it like this.
he put it on here, a public forum, and offered it for sale to people who supposedly know something about these.
so people told him what they thought. now we have a post that says
"it creates the impression that this forum is full of toxic behavior?"
well it's that or leads one to think this forum is a bunch of idiots, if nobody tells him that he's way out of line with that price

    vit·ri·ol

    noun: vitriol

    1.
    cruel and bitter criticism.

Relax dudes, no one is forcing anyone to buy anything.

Getting all uptight serves no purpose other than appearing outwardly inflammatory -- something k-moe is suggesting we (all of us) avoid, for the benefit of the forum as a whole.

The list price is what I have into the bike & parts. If I do sell, I will almost certainly take a loss. You can all sleep well knowing that.

    Cripes!

You're doing the right thing selling it else where. No offer here and I'm inclined to think any offers made would not be acceptable. Good luck with the sale.

No vitriol from me, rather I gave you sound criticism based on experience. You are selling to the wrong crowd, fishing for suckers on a forum dedicated to the thing you are trying to sell is more comedy than business savvy.
