I was going to take my speedometer cable off of my 82 XJ650 Maxim today and clean and lube it when I noticed that the two screws holding the bottom of the speedometer housing were missing. So, I decided to remove the speedometer and tach assembly so I could get to the underside easier. The mounting bolt on the tach side, twisted right off....as in the bolt twisted right in half. The mounting bolt on the speedometer side feels like it will do the same thing when I tried loosening it so I left it. Now, what do I do? It appears that the mounting bolt screws down into the headlight mount and holds it too. Any suggestions? Do I have to get a new headlight mount and new bolt?

    Thanks,
    Stacy

Center punch the broken screw in the center and drill down the exact center of the screw. (keep it straight)
Get an ez-out or some other extractor and it should come out.
I bough a kit from snap-on that has 5 left handed drill bits with 5 matching extractors and it works well!!!
I am an industrial mechanic in the food industry and trust me I have extracted my share of broken bolts and screws.
If worst comes to worst then keep increasing the size of the drill bit until the screw is nothing but threads and then run a tap the same size into the hole to clean it out.
    Hope this helps man

I just tried the broken bolt extractor. The extractor broke off so I'm guessing it's a new headlight mount for me since drilling out a bolt extractor is next to impossible. I guess I should have known that if the bolt is stuck enough to break the bolt in half, then it would snap the skinnier bolt extractor. Oh well, I tried. By the way, the other bolt broke off as well so screw it....piece of crap. I'll just find a used one that I don't have to waste my time on.

Before you quit. Take a punch and nail the extractor with it.
If you are lucky the extractor will break into pieces or shatter!!!
    It works for taps.
