I pulled the hats off my '82 Maxim 750 to clean the carbs and notice upon re-assembly that 2 of the rubber diaphragm/needle units had needles that were shorter and came out at an angle compared to the other 2. I opened the nylon hex cap up and removed the needle (Y-13) to find the heads of 2 ground off (I colored the area black with a marker) and 2 not ground off. The ground ones fit square in the bottom of the slide if you lined up the grind with the bump in the bottom. The unground ones stick up on one side and do not sit square or extend out as far. And of course I have no idea which one came from which carb at this point. What am I missing?

You DON'T want them to line up straight.........sounds like someone didn't know that. When you put the needle in the slide, it will stick out at an angle. When you put the slide in the bore, you reach into the front of the carb with your finger and guide the tip into the jet tube.

I bet you're having trouble with the carbs........those two needles are going to sit farther down, and when you open the throttle the two correct needles will give the needed gas but these two will NOT until the throttle is opened farther.

MAYBE a previous owner tried to do some fancy needle setup stuff, but I'd be surpised.

was someone thying to play with pod setup and adjusting fuel amount? Who knows, but at any rate, these need to be replaced.

They only looked longer because they were positioned incorrectly deeper in the slide.

What you're missing is two good needles. Actually, if someone had two wornout needles, you can swap the plastic collars on the top......I've done it. I'll have to look and see if I have any extra needles..........

Yes I was having carb problems, poor idle (found no O-rings on the mixture screws) and lower midrange had a rough dead spot. WOT seemed fine though. I have no history on the bike, only 13000 miles on it though but it was not running and I bought it from a Russian guy with not so great English. If you had some needle tops that would be great. Some people should not work on their own bikes, or anyone's bikes for that matter! Thanks

Problem solved! I was able to chuck the 2 needles in a drill that acted like a mini lathe. I then used a Dremel with a cut-off wheel as a gouge and took off some of the plastic. I added a SS washer the same diameter as the plastic top and the same thickness as the removed plastic. Now all my needles are the same length and angle. Now it's time to check the valve clearance.
