I HAVE A 82 MAXIM 650 THAT SUDDENLY STARTING RUNNING TERRIBLE AND THEN SHUT DOWN UNEXPECTEDLY. THE BIKE WILL ONLY BARELY IDEAL WITH THE CHOKE ON FOR A FEW SECONDS. THE FUEL SIDE OF THE ENGINE IS ALL IN CHECK. I HAVE GONE THROUGH THE CARBS USING THE RECOMMENDED METHOD OF THIS FORUM, AND REPLACED ALL PARTS THAT LOOKED QUESTIONABLE. I HAVE A STOCK AIR FILTER AND SETUP SO I HAVENT MESSED WITH ANY STOCK SETTINGS. SO WITH THAT SAID MY QUESTIONS IS......IS THERE ANYWAY TO TEST INDIVIDUAL COMPONENTS THAT ARE INVOLVED IN CREATING AND DISTRIBUTING SPARK? I HAVE CHECKED THE TWO IGNITION COILS UNDER THE GAS TANK WITH AN OHM METER AND THEY CHECK OUT OK. ANY OTHER HINTS OR ADVICE WOULD BE GREAT.

    Get a factory service manual.

There are comprehensive troubleshooting steps for each component of the system as well as "fault isolation" circuit diagrams.

If you'd like, PM me with your email address and I can send you the pertinent pages from the 650 book.

Your keyboard seems to be broken - the shift key is stuck. :)

In a nutshell, you can check ignition coils, pickup coils and all the connectors. Manual has resistance values for the coils. The TCI control box cannot be tested without some serious electronics skills and a bunch of specialized equipment most people won't have access to.

I just recently troubleshooted my entire electrical system:

from battery, solenoid, fuses & fuse block, pickup coils, TCI Ignitor, Voltage regulator, starter, Generator, Ignition Coils, and Spark Coils, Ignition Switch, Kill Switch, Relays ( Sidestand & Starting Circuit Cutoff ).....I am not sure if I missed anything ...but you get the message.....alot can go wrong with any one of these areas.....

Sound like alot and it is.....get yourself a factory service manual for your bike and you will get all the help you need here in this forum....

Best way to test your TCI Ignitor is to ship it to someone else with a known running bike and they can test it for you on their bike.....if someone is willing ( I did just that.....thanks to K-Moe )

Also, post your signature......year, Make & model of your bike

    Where ??

Go to "My Account" -------> My Profile Information" ---> Scroll down to "My Signature"---> type your information-----> click "Save Changes"

The Haynes sux. The diagrams I am referring to are not in there, AFAIK.

If you will give me an email address, I can provide you with valuable reference materials to help with diagnosis.
