Ok. Here is a craigslist post and it states that it is a 1985 XJ750. I don't think this is right. :?

    http://fortwayne.craigslist.org/mcy/4567822586.html

I do know that Canada had the '85 750, but not the US. That does not bother me. What bothers me is that it is not an '85.

So, what year is that bike? I know it is not an '85 because I have an '85 and mine has no square headlight nor atari gauges. There are also some other differences, but you'll see them yourselves.

Please someone help. I would like to learn more about these bikes to be able to tell them apart from each other.

You are correct; the ad is wrong.

That is a 750 SECA which means it can only be a 1981 ~1983 model here in the States. (Which also makes it an XJ750R.)

Based on the color, I'd say it's either an '81 or '82 unless the "tins" have been swapped. (The front fender should match the bike color, but it's black so somebody swapped something.)

If it was bought as a "leftover" it is very possible that it got titled as an '85 which it really isn't.

You need to remember that Craigslist if full of misinformation. Also I wonder if that seller could have posted pictures of any less quality.

Engine finish would indicate that it is a 1981 model.

I agree with Len. The '82 and '83 had black cylinder fins and a black valve cover. It also has the amber fog light, which was switched to a clear lens in '82.

There are so many things wrong with that ad, and the condition of the bike, to begin with. I hope nobody here goes after that one. Of course the speedo and tach won't work--the needles are broken....... of course, maybe they ARE working and we just cant tell--cuz the needles are broken.

For that kind of price, the sidecovers better be in real good condition and match color, with good badges, I'd want the correct exhaust, good red on the gauges, a key switch that isn't boogered up, a tank that's not dented, the correct color front fender, a complete brake lever: THEN, a list of what the current shims are, when the brakes were last serviced, and tires that are new enough and enough tread to be be safe and able to pass inspection.

Maybe I'm just a bit picky.....
