I have a 82 maxim 650. I was wounding if there a way to refurbish the pick up for the ignition.

The answer is "Yes" , but why ??

You can get another tested set from E-Bay cheap enough.

If you had 2 pick-up sets with a bad coil each, you could combine the 2.
in a post-apocalypse World where Zombies rule.
Or you could join the "I rebuilt my starter solenoid" crowd (kidding, a bit)

Not a set of coils but the pick up that's behind the cover on the engine.

That is what TIMEtoRIDE was referencing; the pick-up coils.
No matter what is wrong with yours, there is no rebuilding the individual parts. They are solid-state, and sealed. Replacement of the components is the only remedy for failure (unless it's just a broken wire to the component).

What is causing you to think yours is faulty? Other than rapping on one with a hammer, or a severe overvoltage condition, there isn't much that can go wrong.

When bike is cold it will start right up but once I get about a quarter mile and bike warms up the bike begins to barely run and eventually just dies. I have gone through carbs and even took them to a shop. They are ok. I swapped the Tc I and coils under the fuel tank and bike still does it. The pick up is my only other option right?

    Are your valves in spec?
Valve clearances that are way too tight + warm engine = engine dies.
There are other possibilities, but valve clearances are the first variable that needs to be eliminated.

You should check the resistance on the pick-up coils to see if they are in spec. Make checks both when they are cold and after they have been operating:

    Pick-up coils:

    1980-81 XJ650 Maxim and Midnight Maxim: 700 ohms +/- 20% = 560 ohms to 840 ohms acceptable range

    1982-84 XJ650 Maxim: 650 ohms +/- 20% = 520 ohms to 780 ohms acceptable range

This had me flumoxed in the mid eighties for a while on a couple different vehicles. Check the pick up coils and they where in spec EVERY time, until I had the notion of putting it front of the ready heater and BAMM, off the charts, problem solved.

"Starts fine cold, won't run once warm" does generally indicate an immediate need to check and adjust the valves before assuming it's a heat-related ignition fault.

I'll check clearance on the valves. Hopefully that's the issue.
