So I have the swing arm off and need to order some bearings and seal from chacal! In the meantime I'm wondering what I have to do for maintenance with the shaft fluids! I know that I need to put some fluid in the secondary shaft side at the rear tire but I can't seem to find any info for the engine side of it! In pic below I assume grease goes in and around u joint?

What about this side of the u joint? I've seen some that have a fluid at this part that u can drain and change! For the life of me I can't find any info about this!
    Thanks!

NOTHING goes inside the bellows, it's just a cover for a pregreased and sealed u-joint. If you DO see grease or fluid in there, something is seriously wrong.

On the forward side of that bellows is the engine/transmission oil.

The u-joint get the greas smeared around it where you can work it to with you fingers . There's no oil bath for it, or the shaft. The far end of the shaft gets some grease where it fits into the rear hub. The u-joint and the shaft are dry just like under your truck.....only the bike's joint and shaft are protected by the boot and the swing arm housing.
    That's all.

Umm, excuse me? I haven't taken my shaftie that far apart yet, but the u-joint isn't DRY, and smearing grease on the outside won't do much. The critical lubrication in any u-joint is internal.

Don't these u-joints have internal clips holding the cups into the yoke, so that they can be taken apart, cleaned, and properly re-lubed? Inside their bearing cups, where it matters?

If so, that would be the maintenance to perform. If they don't come apart, shame on Yamaha. And we get to wait for 30-year old lube to fail.

No, they don't have clips, so shame is the order of the day (the bearing cups are staked/peened into the joint). But the bearings can be removed and new ones pressed on, and then the joint re-balanced. We do offer rebuilt joints that are ready-to-install.

Fitz..... You're right but no can do with original ones. The reason for a smear of grease is simply so that as it turns MAYBE some will get worked in.... That's all. I know with cars and trucks you can get grease-able joints so I imagine Len would have a source for those too....

Nope, no greasable joints...........no provision for it in the casting. You could drill and tap them for a fitting, but that just seems too risky to us, you don't want a u-joint coming apart at 6000 rpms!
