Why copper washers..

    .. on only two of te head studs and steel on the rest ?

    can anyone explain or should i not be so curious ? Oil seal on galleries maybe ?

    Ah - does that mean I have to scrape away my new VHT paint at those points or use a little hylomar ?

    If you haven't removed them, no problem, if you have you should fit new or anneal them.

    Yeah - I just saw that in the manual for an XS400 where they specifically point out that the 2 copper washers need to be on the right side (where the oil runs along the head bolts).

    I'm guessing this is because the copper washers are more crushable, and thus make a tighter seal. Do I have that right?

    Either I lost them or they weren't fitted when I dismantled the engine (I think the latter since I would have put them with the nuts which I have.)

    So I retrieved some from a spare head I have. To anneal just heat up with a blow-torch and allow to cool at air temp - right ?

    Anneal and put back?????? On a brake line, OK but in the engine I wouldn't.
    They crush to make a seal, those have already been crushed, they don't spring back so they may not seal. A brake line you can just anneal and tighten farther to re_crush, not so on a head
