fried ground to battery from main switch area

    the ground wire coming to the battery from the area of the main switch got hot , and shorted out on my 85 xj 700 water cooled.the insulation melted of off near the battery.any ideas what happened. the bike was running when this happened

    how sure are you that it's a ground wire that's burnt

    the wire goes back to negative side of battery not really sure

    a - wire can't burn unless it gets + form somewhere with no load between them.
    even then it should have popped a fuse long before a wire burnt.
    any hacked wiring on there ?
    you found the battery end, see if you can find the other end where the smoke started, that should be the problem end
