    Hi All

Thought I'd whip the sump off to clean out any cr@p before putting the engine back. Got it on it's side and undone all 12 bolts but nada - will not budge. Not really any pry zones so thinking about forgetting the whole idea unless there's any easy well known fix to this problem

    Cheers

Quite a common situation when you realize it's been on there 30 yrs!
The solution is quite simple, drive a flat thin scraper in between the two being VERY CAREFUL not to gouge the metal. A slight twisting motion before removing then move to another side. Repeat until it comes off.

Idk fast, it's hard not to mar aluminum while prying on it (even with experienced hands). Imo tap on it with a rubber mallet or a block of wood/hammer. It should break loose.

An excellent way to avoid marring aluminum, is to make some scrapers out of copper tubing. Flatten an end with a hammer or in the bench vice, then use a file or bench grinder to give it an edge.

It can still mar and gouge, but you really have to try to do so. Copper is much softer than aluminum.

I was taught not to pry mating surfaces (especially fluid filled ones). To pry is to create possible leaks. Just saying.

try heating the gasket mating area around the perimeter with a propane torch, then tapping gently around the perimeter with a dead blow hammer. lather, rinse and repeat until you achieve your goal.

    Hi Chaps - thanks

Tried the rubber mallet/wood deal but am avoiding prying for reasons suggested. TBH I have no real reason to go in there other than curiousity so I may well leave it..

    Cheers.

How diligent are you tapping? The taps need to be firm but not herculeon. Curiosity killed the cat; satisfaction brought it back. Imo get satisified.
