    Howdy.

I've been looking for a good mechanic down here in So. Oregon. The last place I looked at in town (one that didn't say my bike was too old to work on) said that to get my carbs tuned would run $400. To me, sounds like a ripoff. Any ideas or suggestions? I'm semi-mechanically capable, but not by much!! Anything would be helpful. Thanks guys, I know you'll come through as you always do!!

Why not take a swing at them yourself?? I've just read up on a fellow who will rebuild the carbs and bench sync them for about $350. Putting them on the bike and tuning them in would run another $100 or more. So the fellow you got in touch with is pretty decently priced. But that is half the reason we have this forum, to save you the money that you would otherwise spend on someone else's idea of what is right (which incidently is not always the way you want it). $400 is enough of a reason for me to try the job myself, nothing to loose and $400 to save!

I may just do that. I have yet to get the XJ CD's, but from what I've read so far, that may be my next investment. I'll give them a crack, just don't want to be running to lean. It seems like my baby runs ok, but I don't want to do any damage to the engine if it's not necessary.

    XJ CD's, here I come!!

FYI too............before I ran across this site I bought some CD's off of ebay.............fight the urge people!! It was an effin' ripoff!! All the stuff in that CD I could have figured out myself!!

Thanks again guys..............Love This Site!!!!! 8)

You need to learn to "read the plugs"
Pull the plugs one at a time so you know which cylinder is telling you the story, then compare them to this chart
    http://www.4secondsflat.com/plug_chart.html
for In Depth learning about plug reading visit this site:

He's a racer from Cottage Grove, OR, the site is about race cars, but combustion chambers are all the same, for the most part. The info is still valid.
