What other brand of Carbs fit an XJ750A?

I know I'll get a lot of grief for this but here goes.......

I have a 1981 XJ750A with Hitachi carbs, that I can't afford to rebuild using all the great information you guys give so freely. I have priced a rebuild kit from Len (Chacal) and to be honest I just don't have the kind of money needed.

I have checked the valve clearances, and removed and cleaned the carbs, although not split the rack. Clunck test perfect. I had the bike running well until recently, when the bike began to chuck at lower revs, 2000 to 3000. Plugs are new and the correct colour. Carbs have been balanced and colour-tuned. Current issue is the revs hang when changing gear. No leaks detected using then gas blowlamp around the intake manifolds.

So, the thought has crossed my mind of seeing will carbs off another bike fit?

Now before the barrage of "you'll have to rebuild them too" starts, I have experience of bikes for over 40 years and feel there are probably better makes of carbs out there, which would require a bit less maintainance.

    So to finish....

All I am asking if anybody has fitted, or knows if another brand of carb will fit onto our intakes?

Thanks in advance for your help.

I seriously doubt you'll find anything that will drop right in. By the time you do fabrication, re-jet etc. you'll probably be into as much money and way more time than repairing the stock set.

You may be right, but I think I have to try. I can buy a set of carbs locally for about €50, allowing another €50 to strip and clean them and buy float bowl gaskets, I still save €100. So I think it's a project worth investigating.

I will pull the carbs off again this weekend and measure everything. Then go hunting. I'll keep you posted.

Are you sure you need a complete rebuild kit? For mine, I was able to just replace the soft parts (seals and gaskets) and clean everything up. No new jets, needles, seats or anything, and they are like new, maybe $50USD.

You'll never know the real condition of the carbs you buy til you take them apart, so you could be wasting money on a set that needs as much as yours.
BTW: If you don't have enough money to fix the carbs, old motorcycles aren't for you. What about the tires, valves, brakes, brake cables and MC?
